The Do's and Don'ts

The short list Bob gives everybody — what to do, and what to never do, when somebody is trying to scare you into moving fast.

General education only. A lesson here is not personal financial, tax, or legal advice.

What are the do's and don'ts of spotting a scam?

Do
  • Slow down and check through a separate, trusted route.
  • Keep records, screenshots, envelopes, and caller numbers.
  • Tell a trusted person before money moves.
Don't
  • Do not pay to unlock, verify, or protect an account.
  • Do not share codes, passwords, remote computer access, or full card numbers with a caller.
  • Do not trust urgency. A real deadline can survive a phone call to verify it.
  • Do not download software to your computer or phone because someone who contacted you told you to.

Never download software to your computer or phone because someone who contacted you told you to. If a caller, text, or pop-up says their program will fix or protect your account, hang up and close it — that download is the scam.
